About Project

The nature of the historic ship and the location of this project made getting the gangway out onto the pier and installed very difficult. The Ship’s rigging made the use of a crane problematic, and the pier was not load rated for large vehicles. Hallsten crewmembers installed the ship side landing and swivel hinge in small components and then used our ingenuity to install the gangway without the assistance of large scale lifting equipment.

The process of designing the components to integrate with the existing historic ship, not making any permanent modifications, was handled with a lot of care by Hallsten designers and field installation personnel. A difficult tidal range and the probability of frequent and significant movement of the ship in relation to the shore in all directions required a custom solution for keeping the gangway in a safe landing zone on the pier. In addition to providing ADA access, the gangway now provides power, water and sewage to the ship to facilitate tour activities.
